Spring Update from Bishop Dan

Savior of Sinners
If you were Jesus, who would you scout and recruit to follow you? In ancient Israel there were plenty of clergy, including Chief Priests. There were also Sadducees, devoted to the faith and influential with resources. In terms of lay believers, the Pharisees were certainly ardent and committed. All these could have been perceived as potential top tier recruits. Perhaps near the bottom of the rung in Jewish order were the tax collectors. They were considered traitors and untrustworthy, working for the Romans and seen as stealing from their own people. In today’s gospel, Jesus sees Matthew sitting at the tax booth. He says, “Follow me.” What does this say about Jesus? What does it say about how our Lord seeks us?
